Termites are one of the most destructive pests out there. It's estimated that they cause property damage worth over $5 billion each year. Therefore, knowing when there is a termite infestation in your home or office is important so you can seek professional termite control services.

Also, considering the massive damage these pests cause, any sign of them should be handled as an emergency issue. Here are four telltale signs you need termite control services today.

Discarded Wings

When termites are young and in the reproductive stage, they usually have wings and are known as swarmers. They're highly active, especially during the springtime, searching for mates and new homes to colonize.

As they land on your doors and window sills, the swarmers often twist their wings to discard them off. If you find insect wings near your doors, windows, or other home-access points, you have uninvited guests, and it's time to call termite control professionals.

Head Banging or Clicking Noises

Head banging here doesn't refer to your own head, but the heads of soldier termites against the wood to signal other termites of danger in the colony. Worker termites also produce a lot of noise when feeding on wood. You may be able to hear the munching or banging noises if you put your ears close to an infested piece of wood.

Any evidence of termites should be taken seriously because it means some damage has already been done to your home.

Termite Droppings

Termite droppings, commonly known as frass, are clear warning signs of a termite infestation. Since drywood termites love to build their nests inside wood, they make tunnels as they feed. In the process, they will leave droppings that are usually pushed out of tiny holes near the nest's entrance. In most cases, these droppings are of the same color as the wood that the termites are feeding on.

Dampwood termites also leave droppings, but these are more challenging to spot since they're found inside the infested wood. Overall, if you come across frass, whether inside or outside, or small holes in wood, you have a termite problem on your hands.

Mud Tubes

Subterranean termites usually build pencil-sized mud tubes around their food sources. This can be beneath or near a tree or wood structure in your property or even on cracks around your walls and floors.

These mud tubes are the pathways used by the termites from their nests to the food source. They retain moisture and protect the insects from drying out. When you spot these mud tubes around your property, you know the termites have been around for quite some time, so call termite control experts immediately.
